Guitar Building Mentorship

Over the years I have had the opportunity to share my knowledge, skills, and experience with others. Although I don’t run a school or a formal educational environment, I have been lucky enough to meet people along the way who have asked me to show, help and guide them as they build their own guitars.

As a student you work and learn alongside me in the workshop, with hands-on, one-to-one tutoring. This arrangement works really well for you as the student, and for me as your tutor. I am with you nearly every step of the way, teaching, guiding, showing, allowing. Your questions and ideas, problems and even mistakes, allow you to learn in ways which are meaningful to you and permit me to understand my craft a little better each time. My relaxed and open-minded approach, along with a good sense of humor, helps you ease into your build. I have built guitars and relationships with many interesting people over the years; for this my life is a lot richer.

I have a large selection of hard and soft woods currently in my shop and access to reputable brokers. All the materials are available through my workshop if you wish, but you may have some wood or parts that are important to you.

Finding The Time
My goal is to support you as you build, at your own pace and in your own time. This is an important undertaking and the process must be honoured. It is also really good fun with some humorous visits into frustrations along the way.
There are many ways to find the time to build your own custom guitar. Some people come once a week, or maybe twice, and stay for as long as it takes (sometimes up to a year). Some attend at the weekends or take some vacation time and get a head start. Some want to devote a period of time to building their instrument and come daily, often finding accommodation locally (we can help you with this); after all, Vancouver Island is the most beautiful place on earth.
There maybe a specific part of the build that interests you. I can mix and match or share the building process, dependent on your needs and ideas. I am flexible with your schedules and will accommodate you where I can.

Course Availability
Start dates depend on the stage of build of the other students and are therefore a little unpredictable. The time you are able to make available for building will guide the start and end dates. Contact me for dates
